Pulka Ecolodge

The Far North as a Model

Shackleton survived for two years on the pack ice with his men, without supplies or rescue, with only the upturned hull of the Endurance for shelter. Nansen crossed Greenland on skis. Paul-Émile Victor spent the winter alone among the Inuit and returned a changed man. Matthieu Tordeur reached the South Pole alone, pulling his pulka through the white silence, one step at a time.

What everyone describes when they return is this: the cabin. The moment you walk back inside. The warmth that suddenly envelops your body, the contrast between the biting cold outside and the cozy warmth inside. That moment is the heart of the Pulka Ecolodge.

A Modern Trapper's Cabin

You enter through the airlock—like a necessary passage between two worlds—and the cold stays outside. The architecture of this Rhône-Alpes ecolodge evokes a ski-touring trail, a crevasse in the blue ice. Inside, wood is everywhere—warm and unpretentious. The stove purrs. Perched on top of it, an enameled kettle waits, just like in every good cabin in the Far North.

Hot and Cold

The living room opens onto a huge picture window overlooking the Tarentaise Valley. In winter, when snow blankets the plateau, the landscape is transformed. It feels like you’re somewhere else entirely—somewhere between the Arctic Circle and the mountains, between an eco-lodge in the Rhône-Alpes region and a cabin in Greenland—a story of contrasts.

That’s what the traditional wood-fired sauna is for. For the ancient ritual that Finns have practiced for millennia and that polar explorers adopted as the only true luxury: heat against the cold, steam against the ice, the body letting go of everything. You step out of the sauna, gaze at the mountain peaks, and suddenly it all makes sense. Everything else is mere luxury compared to a trapper’s cabin: a cozy bed, fine linens, a small kitchen equipped for dinner. Nothing superfluous. Just what you need.

That's what sets good mountain lodges—and the best ecolodges in the Rhône-Alpes region—apart.

Included equipment

A small, eco-friendly wooden cabin with a huge picture window, a wood-pellet stove, and just the essentials—so that luxury is all about time, space, and nature.

A big bed makes all the difference. Making sure it's made and that you feel welcome the moment you walk in—that's our way of taking care of you.

Light the fire, let the warmth envelop you, feel the chill of the outdoors. Close your eyes, open up, or talk about your day. A moment just for you.

After a good night's sleep, no matter what time in the morning, what a treat it is to know that a delicious breakfast is waiting for you: mountain bread, cake, fruit juice, cheese, cereal, fruit compote…

Here, there’s no oven, toaster, or microwave! Two stovetops, a fondue pot with its burner, two candle-powered raclette machines, and a few utensils so you can cook for yourself.

A sink, a nice mirror, a shower, and homemade soaps. But for hot water, you’ll have to rely on the sauna—and your ability to mix the water to get the right temperature.
